Madison is the capital of Wisconsin. The estimated population of Madison in 2009 was more than 235,000, making it the largest municipality in Dane County and second largest municipality in Wisconsin, behind Milwaukee which has an estimated population of over 2,000,000.

The State of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Madison are the top two Madison employers. However, Madison's economy today is evolving from a government-based economy to a consumer services and high-tech base, particularly in the health, biotech and advertising sectors. The local economy is more resilient than most other metropolitan areas of similar size. Businesses are attracted to Madison's skill base, taking advantage of the area's high level of education. According to Forbes magazine, Madison ranks second in the nation in overall education.

The greater Madison area has incredible park system and is a Mecca for those who enjoy outdoor water sports. Lakes Mendota, Monona and Wingra all lie within a portion of the City, with two additional lakes (Waubesa and Kegonsa) connected to the Madison lakes via the Yahara river. Madison has a total area of 84.7 square miles, of which, 68.7 square miles is land and 16.0 square miles of is water.

Interstate 39/90/94 runs along the city's east side and provides ease of access to nearby major metropolitan areas such as Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis.
