Lakes Mendota, Monona and Wingra all lie within a portion of the City, with two additional lakes (Waubesa and Kegonsa) connected to the Madison lakes via the Yahara river. Madison has a total area of 84.7 square miles, of which, 68.7 square miles is land and 16.0 square miles of is water.

Interstate 39/90/94 runs along the city’s east side and provides ease of access to nearby major metropolitan areas such as Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis.
